Black Forest Industries Stage .5 Motor Mounts
Filed under Engine
These mounts from BFI are made of polyurethane, 60A in shore hardness and are a huge upgrade over the stock, swiss cheese rubber mounts. However, they are softer than both the Stage 1 poly (85A) and Stage 2 Delrin mounts.
Black Forest Industries developed these motor mounts for enthusiasts wanting an upgrade in both performance and durability, yet were still concerned with daily comfort. These mounts are 60A hardness as compared to the OEM mounts at around 40-45A hardness.
Now included in all motor mount kits are new German-produced bolts. These new pieces are chromate plated yellow to the same specs as the factory hardware, but are a higher grade and use a standard hex head. BFI also includes include a pair of new rear bracket bolts with all full kits and rear mounts. Since originally releasing the motor mount kits, the thickness of the lower retaining washer has been doubled for even more strength.
All mounts are available as kits or individual pieces. The majority of the hardware provided is grade 10.9, which is much stronger than the stock bolts.

Installation:
Gave it a 3. All you need is a jack, a set of jack stands, and basic hand tools that come in a generic tool kit. Also, some PB Blaster (or the like) should be used on the rear engine mount bolt prior to any work.
Performance:
Gave it a 4. It’s an excellent OEM+ upgrade over the stock units. But realistically, the results vary between the 4 cylinder and the VR6 due to engine weight and power diferences. These mounts eliminate most of the movement in the 4 cylinder, but might not be stiff enough for VR owners. With the 4 cylinder, expect some vibration below temps of 50*F. Once the exhaust manifold heats up the mount, the vibration goes all but goes away. VR6’s do not experiance as much, if at all, any vibration from these mounts.
Overall:
: 3Again, gave it a 4, although I’m only using their .5 mount for my rear/upper motor mount. I didn’t want the extreme vibrations replacing the rear/upper mount provides with poly mounts. Installation is relatively easy, even for a novice, with the right tools.

Purchased and Installed:
- Stage .5 upper and lower mounts for front and rear
- G60 solid rubber trans mount
Install:
I gave it a 4 because it wasn’t difficult to do at all. As stated above you only need a jack, jack stands, PB Blaster, sockets, ratchet and an extension. Just be aware of the tight spaces you will have to deal with when getting to the rear mount.
Performance:
After the install there was an instant change in the way the car accelerated, decelerated and shifted. It was more crisp and there was less slop in the shifter (2.0), there were slight vibrations when started cold, but once the engine gets to operating temperature they go away. No problems or adverse vibrations with having the .5’s installed in the rear mount. For a VR, I would suggest stage 1’s due to the added weight.
Overall:
: 4I am very pleased with the quality of the mounts and the solid feel that they give to my car. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a 2.0 and wants crisper shifting, better throttle response and a more solid motor and trans.
