ok, well I wasn't going to create a thread on here (due to being lazy) but there seems a lot of decent blokes on here with the right ideas, so i'll post up my build and await your feedback i'll make it as short as possible...
Here in stralia there is LIMITED to no aftermarket support so the scene here is tiny, although growing it's going to take a looong while for us to match the likes Europe and the states!
However I love the uniqueness of the dubs here and would kill to have a breath of the scene that you guys take for granted so much! So I set out to purchase myself a mk3 VR6, before you slander the 4doors, we don't have the option for the 2door vr unless you convert one but alas, it started out as a completely stock 4d vr6
first pics I have is with:
the RARE vento front swap (haha, well in aus there aren't many ventos and next to none wrecked; also was a black vento so hence the black bonnet)
Standard modified stubby mirrors
Hella all red tails
joey modded vento lights
Kamei lower ducts
Hella Fogs
stripped interior, mod plated as a 2seater
Sparco Pro2000 fixed bucket seat
Willans 6point harness (waiting on the half(full?) cage to be built)
removed flares, aerial, rear wiper, badge, side trims and waiting on smoothing and respray
B&M shifter, which had recently fallen apart on me so i had to bolt it (pic attached)
removed aircon and heater
Neuspeed lightened underdrive pulleys
neuspeed front 25mm and rear 28mm swaybars
VF Engineering front rear engine and transmission mounts
Brembo Grand Turismo kit for the mk4 GTi adapted to fit, includes 330mm 2pc floating discs with 4pot calipers
braided brake lines
Motegi RO_JA 17x7 (temps to clear the brakes)
Toyo Proxes R888
Drummond Motorsport 50mm Coilovers with Koni 300lb front and 250lb rear springs (from memory) with helpers
Update 23/12/08
Samco Hose Kit - Black
Desmond Regamaster Evo's - Black 17x8 et35 5x100 and fully forged = fully light yo!
10mm hubcentric/wheel hubcentric spacers front and rear
Update 15/02/09
Stewart Warner 50mm oil pressure gauge
Stewart Warner 50mm oil temperature gauge
Custom mount for the above ;p
Update 29/04/09
New thermostat
GrUven parts crack pipe
Mocal 230x150x50 oil cooler, braided lines, speedflow fittings
42 Drapht Designs oil pressure Y piece for the oil pessure gauge
Update 06/07/09
Head work complete!
Schrick intake manifold port matched to head and throttle body
Update 28/10/09
Bottom end finished and engine back together!
Purchased Schroth 6point harness
Gruven Parts alloy water pump pulley
Gruven Parts alloy tensioner pulley
North American front bumper lip
MK4 aluminium rear calipers with EBC green stuff pads
R32 sump and pump; Baffled and shallower for more ground clearance
2.9L euro corrado throttle body
Polyurethane rear strut mounts
Audi R8 oil cap
Re-conditioned alternator and starter motor
New water pump
Head specs:
Supertech stainless nitrided over sized valves +1.3mm exhaust and +2mm intake
ported and polished to match the bigger valves
port and gasket matched intake manifold and throttle body
Manley Viton valve stem seals
Supertech dual valve springs
Supertech titanium nitrided retainers
a pair of Cat Cams 290's
ARP hardware
Bottom end specs:
bored out to 83.5mm = 3L
Wossner 83.5 forged 11.0:1 pistons
polished and shot peened rods
new oem bearings and seals throughout
fully balanced
ARP hardware throughout
C2 Motorsports standard thickness metal head gasket
Compression ratio worked out at 11.5:1 --- We didn't want to go any higher as I still want to run on pump fuel.
R32 sump and pump; Baffled and shallower for more ground clearance
Update 11/12/09
Prepped and painted engine bay
Nardi suede deep corn 330mm steering wheel with Worksbell quick release to allow interchange between street and track wheel
Then came some OZ Futuras 17x8 205/40 17x9 215/40 . . . . . Which never fit because of the brembos
Then found some extremely hard to find original Regamaster Evo's in 17x8 +35 5x100!! and fitted the deep euro front lip
Blew the diff
So bought myself an Exedy Sports Ceramic Clutch Kit, Bildon Motorsports 10lb flywheel, Peloquin diff and a 4.24 ring and pinion
need to keep an eye on my oil, so I bought some Stewart Warner oil temp and pressure gauges and mounted them like so . .
Hit up Lakeside International Raceway with street tyres
Smashed front lip and repair job
Then smoked some crack and cooled my oil
my coil pack died, so i was going down the msd route, bought the coil packs and while I was waiting for them to arrive i removed the intake to paint up, then whilst that was off i thought i'd change the leaky valve cover gasket, then whilst that was off i checked the upper chain guides (riding on their rivets ), so whilst the side of the engine and box is off i'll get the head worked on and whilst i'm here I might as well get the bottom end done too I was told and warned of the "while your here bug" and it bit HARD!!
Slowly tucking wires
Bottom end is gawn!
Some of the thick grime from a 270k motor!
Head specs are:
Supertech stainless nitrided over sized valves +1.3mm exhaust and +2mm intake
ported and polished to match the bigger valves
port and gasket matched intake manifold and throttle body
Manley Viton valve stem seals
Supertech dual valve springs
Supertech titanium nitrided retainers
a pair of Cat Cams 290's sounds yumm huh!
ARP hardware
Bottom end specs are:
bored out to 83.5mm = 3L
Wossner 83.5 forged 11.0:1 pistons
polished and shot peened rods
new oem bearings throughout
fully balanced
ARP hardware throughout
No real pics as it's all getting done at the moment
Cat cams - 290
sourced myself a schrick as itb's are waaaaaay to expensive for the moment
thats it for the moment until I upload some more of my progress.
plans are to shave the rear handles, aeriel, hatch and bay, remove as much weight as possible from the front of the car, grind sand and paint the interior, fit the mk4 rear calipers, choose engine management and exhaust shop AND DRIVE!!
untill next update

Man i'd love to huh! We'll see. If I do, the car will be rough as guts for the drive, like nothing else done but the engine! no dash or interior may do, see how it pans out james (it is james yeh )

Yeh, racing is wicked fun! more so on the track in controlled environments where it allows you to really push it
Even though there seems to be a lack of active members here i'll keep this thread updated i'm sorta loosing interest in my other forum atm so i'm hoping this picks up a little . . . |

update in words is:
ABS totally removed
Stock computer loom removed
all that crappy joint sealer in the engine bay and rear of the intereior removed (what a job )
sanded and wating on my super rattle can abilities once i work out what colour
Manual windows thoughout now
fan box gone!
dash stripped of anything unnessassary
re-routed the rear lights loom so it's hidden
painted and fitted rear mk4 calipers with braided lines

oh and I just got a call from my engine builder saying he just worked out the compression at 12.0:1 with the mk4 head gasket! we want it down to 11.5:1 so I need to get the standard thickness head gasket but metal and it looks like C2 Motorsports sell'em They better ship to Aus |

oh man, i'm not game to do that yet, i'll see how the interior turns out
lil update dudes...
ok, i've bought some more thingies including Gruven Parts alloy water pump pulley and tensioner and a carbon fibre vr6 key ring haha Also a mk5 R32 sump and oil pump
I found a program to edit my pics so here we go, just a few of my progress, nothing of my most up to date progress though because I lost interest with editing so many photos
First up, what is this barcode?! it was covered in a thick layer of grime n grease!
Next is the throttle body, shaved and sprayed though i'm trying to source a 2.9L throttle now, do you know of any for sale??
Next is some pics of the interior; To date i've removed all the seam sealer, everything to do with the rear seats and all those little threads that stick up for the wire loom, the fan/heater box and the original computer loom. Just waiting to sand and spray once I get time.
6KGS of wire!
re-routed wire loom for the rear lights and fuel
new manuel window winders in all four doors
And also I bought some rear mk4 calipers, cleaned them up, swaped the carriers over, had some lines made up and and sprayed them
slightly cleaned carrier, it was much dirtier!

Sorry guys for the lack of updates! I got real disheartened for a short while there and had done nothing due to the issues with the engine build
I had MAJOR issues with Wossner and their rings after a month and a bit, so the engine hadn't done anything since, wrapped up and put aside; I was getting pissed and so was my engine builder but thankfully when the next new set arrived they were all good! holly cow batman!
Even after this is done there's still a massive question mark that's hanging around as to what this will make and I hope it'll be decent; from what i've read in the U S of A, 250whp is acheivable so i'd like to get somewhere around that. We'll see.
as for the chassis, i've degreased, grinded and sanded the bay and interior and just waiting on my mate to come over and paint up (in undisclosed colours ); he'll also be shaving the rear door handles, rear wiper and ariel. I've removed the coilovers for a clean up and now replaced the rear mounts with poly mounts and the fronts with the upgraded harder mounts. I've now also managed to source a 2.9L throttle body from the mother land England! So all the work i did on the other throttle is useless now lol all good, just gotta do it all again ; fyi, they don't have the ramp inside so it's quite bigger which should allow more flow giving me more top end.
We've 99% decided on the Haltech PS2000 ecu and the Racepak dash to replace the stock dash; mainly because it has data logging, can display different readouts so I dont need gauges everywhere and also has gps to log your track times oh, and they look wicked!
Have also sourced a North American front bumper lip! woo
I've also just had the alternator and starter motor rebuilt and now painted black to match.
Showtime people! Engine is now complete though sadly I currently have no pics of the car yet because my comp is still broken! (using mothers laptop ) So below are cell phone pics of the progress that my engine builder emailed to me . . . .
So it seems that everything is coming together now, my timeline was the end of the year, but we all know how those timelines end up
Oh, also, I bought myself some street rims, all i'll say is mercedes, yes they've been done before but not overdone; polished and colourcoded (i think)
Also once i'm rolling i'll have my 6 point rollcage fabricated up
Until next time peeps |
