Mk3s Have Character, Other Cars Don’t

Posted on 17 July 2008

Many times I’ve found myself at the local VW dealership drooling over the latest German metal, usually right after seeing a fleet of new VWs out on the road or driving past me, but I’ve yet to bite on a newer model.

Each time, when I get back home afterwards and start thinking about my Mk3 and all the time and effort that have gone into it so far, I realize there’s no way I could part with it and move on.

The ‘You Know You Drive a Mk3 When…‘ thread in the forum is one of my favorites of all time and I can agree with nearly every statement there. When parking my car at work in the morning, I always find myself turning around and looking back at it, several times in fact, before finally heading in.

There’s just something about these cars that always pulls you back. Maybe its the stout, stodgy build. Maybe its the bodyline just below the windows. Maybe its because it has that old school feel while still sporting newer features.

It’s different for every Mk3 owner, but there is something.

The next time you’re thinking about throwing in the towel and giving up, stop by the site and flip through the forums, or just take a drive. It’ll all come back to you quickly.

We love these cars and there’s no way we can turn back.

The thread you mention and your blog post is spot on when it comes to describing the Mk3. I’ve only thought about selling the Mk3 I have once, but that was only because I wanted a VR6 Mk3 in place of it! To me, it’s a great shape that lends so well to the OEM+ and “Euro” tuning, but most of all, it’s just the feel of the steering wheel. I’ve driven my share of Jap cars and while some are great cars and have crazy potential, they lack the heartfelt feeling that’s so inviting in a Mk3.

From a realistic point of view, I do believe I will let go of the Mk3 one day, but some time down the track, when the Mk3 is as old as the classic Beetle now, I reckon I’ll find myself behind one again to relive not only the good times I’ve had with the car, but just to get that feeling again.

    Mike, i couldnt agree more!

In our local VW club we have gtgs once a month, tons a fun and really cool to see all the dubs driving around together and parked in a row, but me and mk3 guys have way more fun! for to us its not about the speed and the boost, the big wheels, the super special interiors, its about having fun and loving our cars for what they are, not because they have big ol wheels and body mods etc.

the mk3 is an awesome platform, its feels nice and cozy in the interior, i love the body styling, i love the wheel sizes that look good on them, and the fact that oem+ is all you need to make the car look outstanding. they just have the perfect amount of trendy vw-ness, and sweet little roadster. i couldnt imagine getting rid of my 95 sport. i just hit 150,000 miles on it, and i plan to keep her goin.
